Review
I've always deemed it impossible to fuse a deep plot with hentai
elements, but Countdown Akira proves me wrong.
CA is truly a brilliant piece of work. Totally obssessed with his
stepsister, Akira is a very complex character. As his past is
gradually revealed, you'll see that in all their years of growing up
together, Akira's stepsister has treated him as a plaything. But
somehow, Akira has always felt that their relationship was special
and unique, beyond conventional understanding. Thus, even as he
sleeps around with countless partners, none of them is allowed to
say his name... because his name is something that only she (his
stepsister) has the right to utter. Akira has some very deep-seated
psychological problems, thanks in no small part to his stepsister.
He lives in his own world.
Kaname is an equally intriguing character. She had always considered
herself fortunate to have a nice boyfriend like Tatsuro. After all,
Tatsuro may not be as good-looking or popular as Akira, but he was
reliable. Akira's devil-may-care attitude infuriates and yet
fascinates Kaname. She is drawn to him like a moth to a flame. When
two intense characters like these come together, you just can't go
wrong.
The artwork is gorgeous. The characters are fabulously drawn -- from
expressive eyes to the silky hair and lithe bodies. The only problem
is, there is a lack of distinctiveness in their physical appearance.
I'm nitpicking here but let's put it this way -- everyone basically
has the same facial features, only with different hair! The
animation style is quite unique. The movements are in sequence but
not continuous; it's hard to describe but it suits the overall tone
of CA perfectly. CA is also very artistic and tasteful in its
treatment of sexual content. The lower body sequences are transposed
with monotone sketches and waves of color. It is explicit without
being trashy and filthy. All in all, this is a very impressive
hentai title which would have garnered a perfect rating if the
characters didn't all look alike.
